Paula studied for her Fine Art degree at WSCAD, Farnham. A couple of years back she decided to move to working part-time so she could take up printmaking again.
Encouraged from a young age to appreciate nature by her Scottish grandad, she still finds her inspiration in the natural world. Her aim is to try and capture the quirky characteristics of the creature she’s been lucky to observe at first hand.
Working from her extensive sketches and her own photography, Paula creates detailed artwork which is then transferred onto a silkscreen.
Screenprinting (traditionally called silkscreen printing) is a technique where a fine mesh is used to print through. Areas on the screen are made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil - which could be made of paper or a photographic emulsion. A squeegee is used to transfer the ink through the un-blocked areas onto the paper below to create the image. Each colour on the image requires a new screen to be prepared. Paula now uses this technique to hand-print all her images at a local college in London.
