Dawn Chorus Platter by Alice Gare
Alice Gare lives and works in Devon Welcombe Pottery, an old smithy converted into a pottery and gallery. Alice had pottery classes as a child and has continued making ever since! She handbuilds pieces in earthenware and porcelain and uses surface decoration techniques to explore colour, texture and form. She designs transfers from her own prints and uses slips to create her unique designs! Drawing on her rural and coastal surroundings as inspiration for both ceramics and glass, botanical references, abstract patterns and fresh vibrant colours are recurring themes throughout Alice’s work.
“Standing outside my studio in the morning I can often hear the sea. I work from an old blacksmiths workshop on the North Devon/Cornwall border. Surrounded by open skies and tall hedgerows full of bird life and wild flowers.”
To create her ceramics Alice uses a smooth Earthenware clay, then layers coloured slips over paper stencils to create patterns and imagery. She also presses found objects, such as plants and shells, into the clay. Alice often uses text and a technique called ‘sgraffito’, a form of decoration made by scratching through the slip to reveal another layer before firing, to add more surface texture and decoration. Alice works on a domestic scale, mainly making clocks, plates and dishes, familiar objects that are designed to be used every day, as well as 'one off 'celebratory pieces.
